What Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Involve?
Plateroti Dermatology uses the Cortex™ laser system in laser skin resurfacing. The Cortex™ system can emit two wavelengths: YAG Erbium lasers and CO2 lasers. The YAG Erbium laser works best on superficial problems like fine lines and wrinkles, while the CO2 laser penetrates more deeply. Patients with acne scarring usually need the CO2 laser.
Acne scars are usually either raised or depressed, with the latter being more common. Depressed acne scars include the following types:
• Ice pick scars – narrow and deep pits
• Boxcar scars – Broad depressions with deep and sharply defined edges
• Rolling scars – Shallow and rounded scars
Part of the goal of acne scar laser treatment, therefore, is to give the patient smoother, more even skin.
Plateroti Dermatology uses the Cortex™ CO2 laser, which is fractionated. That means the laser emits discreet beams of light that create microchannels in the skin. It is a type of “controlled wounding” that stimulates the body’s healing processes and encourages the formation of new collagen and elastin to add structure and elasticity to the skin.
Treatment time varies depending on the size of the treatment area. It can take as little as minutes, or it can take well over an hour. It all depends on the unique situation.
Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Treatment?
The ideal candidate will be in good overall health with skin that is dealing with the right type of acne scarring. Of course, women who are pregnant or nursing are not good candidates. Patients who have skin infections or rashes in the treatment area need to wait for their condition to clear up before undergoing treatment.
