The Many Benefits of Chemical Peels
As our first line of defense, our skin bears the brunt of exposure to the sun and other elements. Add in normal aging, and it's no surprise that wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and other skin issues can occur. The good news is chemical peels can help restore a smoother, younger looking appearance.
Dr. Carmelo Plateroti and our highly trained staff provide state-of-the-art dermatologic and aesthetic treatments at Plateroti Dermatology in Templeton, California. With our specialized combination of Western medicine and holistic care, we can do everything from meeting your medical needs like skin cancer treatment to helping you look and feel your best with injectables, fillers, laser procedures, chemical peels, and more.
Chemical peels
During a chemical peel treatment, we apply a special solution to the skin to cause it to exfoliate and eventually peel away. The fresh new skin is healthier, smoother, and more youthful-looking.
This procedure can typically be done on the face, neck, and hands and can address a number of skin issues, ranging from fine lines and wrinkles to dark patches of skin, superficial acne scarring, the loss of collagen, large pores, and more.
Types of chemical peels
There are multiple types of chemical peels depending on how deep the treatment penetrates.
TCA peels
Also known as a trichloroacetic acid peel, this is a powerful treatment designed to penetrate deeply into the skin to address significant issues of hyperpigmentation and aging. Different concentrations of the solution allow for a procedure personalized to the individual and their specific needs.
We begin with a consultation to determine the patient's skin type and goals and then develop a customized plan. On the day of the procedure, we thoroughly clean the skin and then apply the solution for a designated period of time. More than one treatment may be recommended for best results depending on the skin condition.
Following the procedure, individuals should wear sunscreen and avoid the sun when possible as the skin will be more sensitive.
Jessner peel
Gentler than a TCA peel, a Jessner peel often works best for people who have darker skin tones or have melasma. This procedure can also address wrinkles and fine lines as well as large pores. Typically five or six peels done one month apart are recommended.
For best results we suggest using a brightening lotion with hydroquinone, botanicals, antioxidants, and Retin A for two to three months prior to the peel. This will help begin the skin's process of exfoliation as well as lightening dark areas.
