Botox is one of the many tools in our toolbox.

Types of wrinkles

It's easy to look in the mirror and just see wrinkles, but they are actually divided into two types that occur for different reasons with each having its own treatment.

One type—very fine lines—occur when the skin's collagen starts to thin, resulting in stretching and sagging. These small wrinkles are best addressed with a treatment that adds volume and increases collagen production.

Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, result from the movement of facial muscles repeatedly performing common expressions like smiling, laughing, and even squinting. They are with us from birth though they become more visible and pronounced as we get older. Examples include lines on the forehead, chin dimpling, and crow's feet at the corners of the eyes. These are best treated with Botox injections.

Botox

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A injections and consists of neurotoxins that block nerve signals to muscles. It reduces wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles and allowing them to become smoother.

Treatment

Treatment usually takes about 30 minutes. There is no downtime, so you can continue with your day right after the procedure. Typically, muscles start to relax and wrinkles decrease within about a week. Botox wears off after four to six months, so periodic appointments are necessary to keep wrinkles from returning.

Safety

Botox was approved over 20 years ago to treat moderate-to-severe forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet and is the number one selling treatment of this type. Its safety and effectiveness have been studied in 4,700 peer-reviewed medical journals.

Repeated use of Botox has been found to have several benefits. When started at a younger age, it may slow the development of wrinkles visible when the face is at rest. Over time, you may also need fewer visits and less medication to retain the effect. Finally, by relaxing the muscles, it may help keep headaches at bay.
