Fillers or Botox? Which One Is Right for Me?
Although wrinkles, loss of facial volume, and more are a natural part of aging, it doesn't mean we have to accept their impact on our appearance. Dermatologists have a number of tools available to help you look your best, including Botox® and dermal fillers.
Dr. Carmelo Plateroti and our highly skilled staff at Plateroti Dermatology in Templeton, California, bring more than 30 years of experience to our dermatology and aesthetic treatments. We use a mix of Western medicine and holistic practices for an integrative approach and personalized treatment plan for all our patients whether you're seeking care for a health issue or wanting to reduce signs of aging.
Botox vs dermal fillers
Botox and dermal fillers have a number of things in common. For one, they can both be used to reduce wrinkles on the face. In addition, each is administered by an injection and is minimally invasive. They can also last for a period of time — in the case of Botox typically three to four months while dermal fillers can work for anywhere from six months to two years depending on the type used and area being treated.
However, they differ in many ways as well.
Botox
Wrinkles can be created by muscles that repeatedly contract over an extended period of time particularly between the brows, at the corners of the eyes, and as frown lines. Botox uses a purified bacteria, botulinum toxin type A, to relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, which, in turn, gives the desired appearance of smoother skin.
Dermal fillers
Also known as soft tissue fillers, dermal fillers can reduce wrinkles and increase facial volume that’s lost as a result of aging by injecting one of a number of different ingredients into the designated area(s) as decided during your personal consultation. Some examples of dermal fillers in the JUVÉDERM® family include the following:
JUVÉDERM XC
This hyaluronic acid filler can smooth out moderate-to-severe wrinkles that occur around the nose and mouth. Typical results can last up to a year.
VOLUMA®
VOLUMA can restore lost volume to the cheek and midface areas to help counteract sagging skin with results often still visible up to two years later. Improvement may also be apparent in the lower face and jawline.
Vollure®
People who experience deep wrinkles and facial lines in areas like the nasolabial folds can benefit from treatment with Vollure with improvements that can last up to 18 months.
Volbella®
For individuals looking for a touch up in delicate areas like the lips and fine lines around the mouth, Volbella can provide smoother skin for up to a year, while not giving an "overfilled" appearance.
