Skin facts
Our skin is an amazing organ. Each inch is comprised of 19 million skin cells of which 30,000 are shed each minute. Not only that but it contains 11 miles of blood vessels.
Despite all these remarkable characteristics, however, we can still struggle with our complexions not being as clear as we desire—and with making mistakes as we pursue smoother, fresher looking skin.
Mistakes to avoid
Caring for our skin is more involved than a quick wash before bed, and it's easy to make missteps through both our actions and inactions. For example:
Not wearing sunscreen
Sunscreen should be applied daily whether you're inside or out and regardless if the weather is sunny or cloudy. Sun exposure with its harmful UVA and UVB rays can lead to sunspots, skin damage, and even cancer. Too much time near blue light from digital screens and fluorescent lighting can negatively affect the skin as well.
Inadvertently harming your skin
Picking at your skin, including popping pimples, can result in irritation, inflammation, the spread of bacteria, and even scarring. Over exfoliating can also cause damage to the skin, leading to tiny tears and problems with the skin barrier. General exfoliation should be done once or twice a week or, if using a gentle formula, no more than three times a week.
Improperly caring for your products
For optimum skincare results, your products and tools need to be in their best shape possible. Avoid storing them in areas that are too warm or moist, and be sure to keep them out of the direct sun, which can cause them to heat up and deactivate.
Also, keep in mind that products don't last indefinitely. Be sure to check for expiration dates and pay attention to how long you have had them open and exposed to light and air. Generally speaking, products in opaque, pumpable containers often last longer than those with clear packaging and open-top lids.
Forgetting to moisturize
Using the right products, including a moisturizer, goes a long way toward skincare success. Hyaluronic acid works great to moisturize your skin. If you're in a dry, cold environment, be sure to add a moisturizer on top. Even those with oily skin should moisturize using a fast-absorbing, lightweight, oil-free serum.
Not getting professional help when needed
Sometimes getting assistance from a medical professional can make all the difference in improving your skin. We can treat common issues like acne and skin blemishes, provide access to specialized skincare products, and give personalized advice on your regimen based on your skin type and challenges.
